Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix 20.04.1 LTS Released

The Ubuntu Cinnamon 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa Wallpaper

Hello everyone!

I’m proud to present Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix 20.04.1 LTS, our first Point Release for 20.04 “Focal Fossa”

A Point Release is an occasional rebuild for our LTS (Long Term Service) Release. This is good for people who want to install our LTS but don’t want to have a long install or have a long series of upgrades. It occurs every six months in between the releases (February, and July/August).

There isn’t much to talk about, but let’s go through a brief explanation through what has changed.

Release Notes

Ubuntu Cinnamon Spices

  • If you don’t already know, the community of the Cinnamon DE has created applets, desklets, and extensions for the desktop.
  • Applets are small little extensions that fit in your panel. Desklets are the same but larger in various sizes and for your desktop, and extensions are for generally cinnamon, or anything else that doesn’t fit in the category.
  • Now the Ubuntu Cinnamon Spices (ubuntucinnamon-spices) package will install some of the best Spices out there. And hopefully soon, my plan is to make cinnamon-spices as universal as possible by bringing it upstream and across Cinnamon.

The spices are:

  • Applets:
  1. CinnVIIStarkMenu
  2. Cinnamenu
  3. Betterlock (Display numlock/caps lock indicator)
  4. World Clock Calendar
  5. Collapsible Systray
  6. Places Applets – one similar to GNOME’s Extension menu and one similar to MATE’s menu.

Desklets:

  1. TimeAndDate (Fork of Cinnamon’s TimeAndDate desklet. Improved with more features)
  2. Calculator
  3. Analog Clock

Extensions:

  1. gTile – Tile your windows as you like
  2. Transparent Panels
  3. Watermark – Place a neat looking watermark on your desktop

Our Desktop Environment

  • Our desktop environment has changed by being a little more friendlier and more accessible for impaired users.
  • Bug Fix: Highlight in Gedit has been disabled.
  • Date Format is now e.g. Fri, Jul 17 2020 2:14 PM rather than displaying all information at once that may not be necessary to the user.
  • Whenever possible, the “Run Command” dialog can now be accessed via Super+R. It can alternatively be accessed via Alt+F2.
  • Screenreader will now (actually) work on Alt+Super+S.
  • Bug Fix: In Nemo, fix size calculations to binary instead of base-10 calculations. (A megabyte is now what it should be, 1024 KB, not 1000 KB)
  • Nemo’s sidebar width for the directories is now 200 pixels.

Artwork

  • Perhaps one of the biggest changes in 20.04.1 is our new artwork updates. We are now starting to truly show who we are.
  • Our lightdm theme is now a separate package as part of the ubuntucinnamon-artwork package.
  • We now have a Plymouth Theme you voted on a few months ago-a fork of Ubuntu’s flicker-free spinner theme, modified to show “ubuntucinnamon” rather than “ubuntu”. Your PC manufacturer image will also show and there will be a small fading-out end animation at the end.
  • Otherwise, we all know that our Kimmo theme isn’t exactly… always good. So we’re working on it.
  • Our Icon theme is now fixed-there is now a shadow behind the folder’s front and there have been some more fixes.
  • Our GTK theme is still in the works and will be updated as soon as possible.

Other

  • We took out the ‘cinnamon-remix’ stuff-we are now just calling it simply “Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix” or “ubuntucinnamonremix”. This way it will look more like a real OS on the installer.

Removed Packages

  • Read our last news blog explaining this section.
  • The Cinnamon-Layout and Cinnamon-Folder-Color tool have been removed. As soon as possible, we would love to have them back in or be substituted back.

There are lots of bugs, and exciting new features to look out for in 20.10. But for now, we can just wait and hope for time as we get closer to flavor status, hopefully, in 2021.
