Why Ubuntu Cinnamon ?
Want to know more ?
It will feature not just the Cinnamon Desktop, which is great for users that like Windows-like setups or migrating from Windows, it will also come with features that can help make it look the way you want it to look. Featuring applets, desklets, and all kinds of software, it also helps raise awareness for the small desktop project not much of us use, which can help the Debian team package the Cinnamon Desktop, which can help us allow us to get to the latest version of the Cinnamon Desktop to be more reliable on us and our users.
We only support amd64, or 64-bit. If you are not happy with that, Debian, our upstream, supports pretty much all platforms, so if you want to run Ubuntu Cinnamon on a non-64-bit platform, then you can contact the team and we will guide you through the process (you will need administrator privileges, and a lot of patience).
Q: What type of architectures are supported?
Now that Ubuntu is no longer supporting 32-bit (i386) architecture, your best bet is to install Debian, and install Ubuntu Cinnamon and everything that goes with it from the repository. Page will be coming soon on how to do that with any other architecture Debian (our upstream) will offer.
Q: What type of software will Ubuntu Cinnamon have?
Well, we won’t give bloat. We will give you the Cinnamon desktop, proudly made by Linux Mint. We will also deliver some themes that can help you get straight to customizing to your feel, and a few other extra software that should be able to make your experience as best as possible. Remember, if you have any requests, tag us @UbuntuCinnamon on Twitter or message us on Telegram t.me/ubuntucinnamon .
Q: How easy-(someone else) wait, wait, what about the NVIDIA drivers? (people in background) Yeah, some of us hate NVIDIA drivers! (other people) Are you going to talk about that?
(part 1): Ahhhh…. the NVIDIA drivers………. what a great story for another time.
(part 2): Ubuntu is in charge of drivers. So if you have issues, and its on Ubuntu, you’d be best contacting THEM, and not us. If you say other flavors like Ubuntu MATE listened to the community and helped them, that is wrong because all flavors are partnered with each other and support one-another. There is literally no reason the flavors would refuse to not give it to Ubuntu for all of Ubuntu. Case closed. So if you say we will need a lot of LUCK with this project because we will be the worst, then for real-learn the background. Come on guys, this project is for YOU!
Q: Great. So Ubuntu Cinnamon exists-so Linux Mint has no need to exist.
No, let me explain this. Ubuntu has Cinnamon, but they don’t BUILD Cinnamon, Debian, its upstream does that. Linux Mint will be the primary source of building it, and it comes with extra packages that make Linux Mint, well, Linux Mint. They have the latest Cinnamon too, so they are in charge of that. Therefore Ubuntu Cinnamon won’t come with that Mint bloat and will be a few versions behind Cinnamon. So therefore, Linux Mint and Ubuntu Cinnamon are different, and we shall all not fight them-just be kind, and we might chip in donations every once in a while.
