Announcements regarding Ubuntu Cinnamon 21.10 (Pros and Cons)

Hello everyone!

I have some news about the release progress for Ubuntu Cinnamon 21.10 “Impish Indri”. Some of them are a bit negative, but there are some pros aswell.

First: Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix 21.10 will ship with Cinnamon 4.8.6, like Hirsute Hippo 21.04 did. Due to the Bullseye freeze, the Cinnamon team (which is in a limbo state because I need to be the maintainer.. but because of other circumstances by New Members request was closed. However, this will open up the door to more stability and updates, so make sure you keep your system up-to-date!

Second: We are finally retiring from Calamares. Ubiquity has now been fixed and should be ready for use in 21.10. There is no background or huge customization in it, but it is functional, easier to use, better maintained, and as soon as the new desktop installer is ready, we will use it.

Third: More of a developer thing – due to the huge amount of Sass and icons in Cinnamon that exist, and the lack of current icons, full Cinnamon support for Yaru will be delayed for now. We will continue with creating a branch of the Yaru releases that will recolor everything to our Cinnamon orange and brown color scheme.

Fourth and foremost: Please help us with Quality Assurance. Spend some time testing an ISO, and report bugs! I will soon work more on our QA home on GitHub, along with what hardware and tests we need to pass to be successful.

What does this mean for flavor status? This is a question that I always ache at, and so are our friends from Ubuntu Unity. I have stopped making predictions for when we will be able to apply for a flavor but currently the conditions shown in Debian and Ubuntu currently for me, show that it may take at least another year. But hey, the only difference is that we get more infrastructure from Canonical (and we don’t have to append Remix to everything)

Stay put for new ISO builds, and come help us test!

All the best, and Shana Tova,
-Joshua Peisach
